Life 101: Valentine’s Day

By Rick Watson

Today is Valentine’s Day.   If you haven’t gotten your honey something sweet, you still have time; be mindful of what you get.

I have purchased some unfortunate gifts for my spouse on Valentine’s Day, so I am qualified to speak on this topic.  There are commercials and advertisements that tell you what to buy, I am here to tell you what not to buy.

An umbrella is one of the handiest tools ever invented.  It’s the first thing I reach for on a rainy day, but NEVER buy one for a Valentine’s gift.  It might be red and smells like roses but do NOT buy one for a Valentine’s gift, birthday, or anniversary gift.    Experience speaking here.

I have a friend who got the wacky and I thought very creative idea  to give his wife bricks as a gift.  It would be his way of telling her that he was building a new house for her.  After living in rental for years, he thought would be a perfect gift for Valentine’s Day.   She did not receive that gift in the spirit in which it was given, and gave him some unusual creative ways to use those bricks.  He was in the doghouse so long; Milk Bones began to taste good.

Another group of items to stay away from, kitchen utensils: though I have bought my wife a new iron (ather request) , she is one of those weird creatures who actually enjoys ironing.

Other gifts you might want to stay away from:  Exercise classes, gym memberships, and workout clothes.  You might think all are practical, but not on Valentine’s Day.  You might as well tell your honey she has put on some weight and it’s not her most flattering look.

Here’s another shocker, for many women that Victoria Secret’s stuff is not what is on their wish list and here’s why, she knows it’s not really for her, that gift is REALLY for you.   But here’s how you maneuver that one, put it on your wish list for YOUR birthday or Christmas present.

The best gift I ever gave my wife was a home made coupon booklet that included, me washing her car, taking out the garbage, a foot massage, a back rub, and of course some other favors that would be imprudent to discuss in a family newspaper.  She also loves homemade Valentine cards and if the holiday falls on a workday, she really enjoys being taken out for dinner.  And if you are truly at a loss, ask her what she would like.  Happy Valentine’s Day.
