In a momentous decision, the Jasper City Council has unanimously approved a proposal by Mayor David O’Mary to significantly increase funding for Bevill State Community College’s Jump-Start program and workforce development initiatives. This move demonstrates the city’s commitment to supporting educational opportunities and workforce readiness within the community.
Mayor David O’Mary presented the proposal, which includes an additional $40,000 allocation for the Bevill State Community College Jump-Start program, bringing the city’s total contribution to $100,000 for this scholarship program. Additionally, an extra $50,000 will be designated for Bevill State’s workforce development program. The funding for these initiatives will be drawn from the General Fund, resulting in a total increase of $90,000, taking the total contribution from the city to Bevill State to $150,000 annually.
The Jump-Start Program, specifically, will benefit from the $100,000 allocation by providing dual enrollment opportunities for 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students in the Jasper City Schools. This investment aims to enhance college and career readiness among local youth, empowering them to pursue higher education and gain valuable skills for the workforce, starting in the upcoming 2024-2025 academic year.
