Naloxone boxes added in Empire, west Walker

Jubilee House now has naloxone distribution boxes in multiple areas in Walker County.

The nonprofit recently received a $5,000 grant from the Comer Family Foundation to help expand harm reduction initiatives and naloxone distribution.

“We have used some of those funds to purchase four new distribution boxes to expand naloxone access across the county,” said Ryan Cagle, founder of Jubilee House. “The first two new locations are now in operation.”

Those new locations are at the Rolling T Truck Stop between Carbon Hill and Nauvoo as well as at The Blue Store in Empire.

The distribution boxes will only contain nasal naloxone (Narcan brand and ReVive brand.)

“This could not have been made possible without the people that work at both of these new locations,” Cagle said. “We also want to make sure we give serious credit to Elizabeth Hurst and Krissie Gilbert for their diligent efforts in finding a location in the Carbon Hill/Nauvoo area and for their naloxone distribution work in that community. Shara Legg, Dee Bramblette, and Debra Kitchens, three of our on the ground outreach team, also deserve credit for building the connections necessary for The Blue Store to allow us to host a distribution box and for all the monthly outreach distributions they do across the county.”

Cagle said the group is still looking for two additional locations.

Jubilee House also announced that as of Monday it has provided 4,170 free doses of naloxone across Walker County in less than a year through its outreach volunteers and its Project HERO 24/7 distribution sites.
