A proposed plea deal with a Walker County jailer was released today.
The proposed plea deal with Joshua Conner Jones would have the former jailer plead guilty to federal charges of conspiracy against rights and deprivation of rights under color of law. The charges stem from incidents with two inmates during Jones’ time of employment.
The charge of conspiracy against rights is related to the arrest, detainment and eventual death of Tony Mitchell in January of 2023. According to the 18-page plea agreement, Jones and 5 co-conspirators, mistreated, neglected and denied medical care to Mitchell, who remained largely unresponsive during his incarceration. They also denied medical staff access to Mitchell throughout his time in the jail. Mitchell was eventually transported to Walker Baptist Medical Center, where he died. His autopsy listed the manner of death as “homicide” from hypothermia and sepsis.
The other charge relates to an unnamed individual whose was allegedly struck while in the jail in September of 2022.
The plea deal will go before a judge for finalization on August 15.
