SUMITON, Ala. (Community Journal) – Anyone struggling with an outstanding case, payment plan or warrant in the City of Sumiton will soon have a chance to get back on track.
The city announced Wednesday that the Sumiton Municipal Court Amnesty Day on Dec. 5 will give people the opportunity to come to municipal court without fear of arrest to resolve or reset their cases.
“Life can be very complex and people fall behind in payment plans, fail to attend a court appearance or fail to complete some task ordered by the court,” the city said in a statement on Facebook, adding a list of things that can be handled that day.
People with the following problems can make use of the opportunity:
- An active warrant with the City of Sumiton for a municipal offense
- Have fallen behind on a payment plan
- Have an active warrant for failure to pay or failure to appear
- Have failed to do something ordered by the court
- Have questions about a completed case
- Have questions of need assistance about reinstatement of your driver’s license
The city said that they are asking local attorneys to attend Amnesty Day to be available to give advice or provide help for individuals that need it.
Additionally, they said they will be talking to other municipal courts’ judges and magistrates in the area so that they might be able to make arrangements to settle cases in those jurisdictions as well.
Amnesty Day will take place at Sumiton City Hall on Dec. 5 from 8:30 a.m. until 6 p.m.
