The Jasper City Council voted Tuesday to rezone several pieces of property near Jasper High School to make way for the new Viking Cove subdivision, which is currently under construction.
The subdivision development is located off 20th Avenue East, and it will feature 140 homes when finished. The project is being led by Prominence Homes, a Birmingham-based build to rent housing company.
The rezoning on Tuesday was for Phase 2 of the Viking Cove development.
The council approved rezoning a 3.89 acre and 4.08 acre parcel of land located at and near Viking Dr and 20th Ave from the B-T (Business Transitional) zoning district to the R-4 (Single Family Urban Dwelling) zoning district.
The city also rezoned a 5.94 acre parcel of land located at and near Viking Dr and 20th Ave from the B-T (Business Transitional) Zoning District to the R-4 (Single Family Urban Dwelling) zoning district.
The final pieces of property rezoned on Tuesday was a 19 acre and a 1 acre parcel of land located at and near 20th Ave from the A-G (Agricultural) Zoning District to the R-4 (Single Family Urban Dwelling) zoning district.
According to its website, Prominence Homes typically builds 3- to 4-bedroom homes, from 1,207 square feet to nearly 3,000 square feet.
“Having an adequate housing stock is essential to growing a city,” Jasper Mayor David O’Mary said after Tuesday’s meeting. “With some 140 new homes centrally located in the city, we are better prepared to promote Jasper.”
