A recent accident has left the county down one garbage truck, but members of the Walker County Commission recently voted to replace the truck, which was declared a total loss.
Commissioners voted to purchase a used 2018 garbage truck for $149,575.
The 2014 garbage damaged in the crash was insured and the county will receive funds toward replacing the vehicle, said Robbie Dickerson, county administrator.
“The amount we will receive isn’t known until it goes through the insurance process.”
John Dunagan, solid waste supervisor, said the driver tried to avoid a car on Arkadelphia Road and crashed into the shoulder of the road. The driver suffered minor injuries and is already back to work.
The commission during its Oct. 17 meeting also approved a vehicle repair and maintenance bid.
The request from the Walker County Sheriff’s Office was for bids from auto repair and oil changes. Sheriff Nick Smith requested the bid be awarded to Carl Cannon Chevrolet.
During the process, the county requested an hourly rate for services and specific oil change info on new vehicles. On most of the items, Carl Cannon was most competitive and lowest bid. The county also has a lot of GM vehicles currently under warranty.
