MARTINSVILLE, VA — Martinsville police say two people have been arrested in connection with the May 12 killing of Marcie Hunt, 53, and the shooting of a man who survived with serious injuries. Investigators said a tip led them to a home in the 1300 block of Hillcrest Road, where De’Corrius Thompson was arrested on June 13. A warrant had also been issued for Kaniya Finney, whom police said was arrested earlier in the case. Both suspects are from Martinsville.
How The Case Developed
Police first responded to the 300 block of Hairston Street around 10:30 p.m. on May 12 after reports of a shooting. Officers found two people who had been shot and began treating the case as a homicide. Hunt was taken to SOVAH Martinsville Hospital, where she later died from her injuries. The other victim, a man, was also hospitalized and remained in serious condition, according to police. At the time, investigators said they were still processing the scene and interviewing witnesses.
Charges Filed Against Thompson
Authorities said Thompson was charged with first-degree murder, malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Police also said he faces an outstanding felony probation violation charge out of Henry County. In addition, Thompson has multiple unrelated charges from Virginia State Police, including malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, use of a firearm from a vehicle and maliciously shooting at an occupied vehicle. Police did not say those separate cases were connected to Hunt’s killing.
Finney's Earlier Arrest
Before Thompson was taken into custody, Martinsville police said they had arrested Finney on May 27. She was charged with accessory to first-degree murder and accessory to malicious wounding. Investigators said warrants were issued for both suspects after detectives processed the scene, collected evidence and interviewed witnesses. The department has described the matter as an active and ongoing investigation. Officials did not release further details about what led to the shooting or how the two suspects are alleged to be involved.

Police are asking anyone who knows where Thompson or Finney may be to call 911 immediately. Anyone with information about the shooting can also contact Sergeant Jason Vaughan at 276-403-5247 or Crime Stoppers at 276-63CRIME, which is 276-632-7463. Crime Stoppers said callers may remain anonymous and could be eligible for a reward of up to $2,500. Investigators said the case remains open as they continue gathering information and evidence related to the fatal shooting.
