HAMPTON, VA — A late-night crash on Interstate 64 eastbound near Hampton Roads Center Parkway left one person dead and three others injured, Virginia State Police said. Troopers responded at about 9:45 p.m. after the collision involved a Ford Escape, two motorcycles and a Ford Explorer. Investigators said the chain of events began when a 2013 Ford Escape driven by a 50-year-old woman changed lanes in front of two motorcycles. One motorcycle then struck the SUV, crashed and caught fire.
How The Crash Unfolded
State police said the rider on the motorcycle that hit the Ford Escape was identified as 30-year-old Andrew Sturdy of Newport News. He died from his injuries, and his next of kin was notified. The other motorcycle involved was a 2008 Suzuki driven by a 23-year-old man. VSP said he was injured in the crash but his injuries were not life-threatening. The account remains preliminary as investigators continue to piece together the sequence of impacts on the interstate.
Other Drivers Injured
The driver of the Ford Escape was taken to a hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, according to VSP. A fourth vehicle, a 2013 Ford Explorer, also became involved in the wreck after hitting the original car. State police said the Explorer was driven by a 21-year-old man who was also transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Officials did not release additional details about the people injured or say whether any of them remained hospitalized.
Scene Cleared Overnight
By the time the investigation was updated, all vehicles had been removed from the roadway and all lanes were open again. That allowed traffic to resume on the busy eastbound stretch of I-64, which carries drivers through the Hampton area and toward the Peninsula. State police did not report any other hazards tied to the crash scene. The roadway reopened while investigators continued collecting information about the sequence of events and the causes of the collision.

Virginia State Police said the crash remains under investigation, and no charges or citations were mentioned in the initial report. The agency’s early findings point to the lane change as the start of the collision, but officials have not said whether speed, visibility or other factors played a role.
