Austin and Hunter Evans have grown up around race cars. Spending weekends at race tracks all over the state has been a way of life for the two brothers, so much so that now they even find themselves racing each other sometimes.
Austin, 22, and Hunter,19, support each other, racing in outlaw and open wheel modified events, but they’ve been known to swap a little paint with each other in street stock races.
“We are competitive, but we always want each other to do well,” Austin Evans said. “I’m not going to let my little brother win when we are against each other and he’s the same way. If we win, we earn it.”
The younger brother feels the same way.
“We are both good drivers,” Hunter Evans said. “And we bring out the best in each other.”
The brothers, both Cordova graduates who live in the Boldo community, have raced in Sayre and Jasper, but spend most of their time at Montgomery Motor Speedway and Huntsville Speedway. They also race at Five Flags Speedway in Pensacola, Florida.
Keith Evans, a longtime racer himself, works as pit crew chief for his sons.
“I love watching them do what they do best,” he said. “I try to stay calm on the radio and make most of the calls. The boys are also constantly helping each other out. We have a lot of fun with it.”
Genia Evans said watching her sons on the race track is one of her favorite things.
“Like any momma, I’m nervous when they are out there, but they love it so much and are good at what they do.”
Genia Evans serves as the marketing/sponsor person for the race team. She said the boys us and the father do all their own work on the cars, working in the shop any day they are not racing.
“We are always looking for sponsors to help these hard working country boys,” she said. “Even giving enough for gas or tires will get a sponsor’s name on the car.”
Current sponsors are Terra Pro, Southern Tint & Tire, Rocky Underground Construction, Evans Marine and Beauty by Lynlee at Sweet Mercy Salon.
Genia Evans said the boys’ dream is to hopefully be picked up by a team for bigger races in the future. They will be competing in the 55th annual Snowball Derby in early December in Pensacola.
