WASHINGTON, D.C. (Community Journal) – President Donald Trump said federal workers are being fired as the federal government enters its sixth day of a shutdown with no end in sight.
According to the Associated Press, Trump was asked Sunday night when workers would be fired as he threatened to do in the lead up to the shutdown.
“It’s taking place right now, and it’s all because of the Democrats,” the president said, declining to specify which agencies would see their workforce cut.
At the heart of the shutdown is healthcare.
Democrats want to renew subsidies to Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act seen in what is known as the Big Beautiful Bill. Republicans want to let the them expire.
While appearing on Sunday news shows, House Democrat leader Hakeen Jeffries said there have been no talks with Republicans since a White House meeting back in Sept, adding that they, including President Trump, “have gone radio silent.”
Both parties have gone out of their way to blame the other for a shutdown that is hurting thousands of government workers, with essential employees continuing to work without pay.
House Speaker Mike Johnson is expected to hold a press conference Monday morning at the capital.
