Decatur Heritage powers past Carbon Hill

Carbon Hill 16 | Decatur Heritage 26

TRINITY – Sixth-ranked Class 1A Decatur Heritage built a double-digit halftime lead and held off 3A Carbon Hill 26-16 on Friday in the game played at West Morgan High.

Nash Thomas finished with a touchdown catch, a fumble recovery and an interception for the Eagles (2-0). Jackson Thomas contributed a touchdown reception and run each. Bo Solley threw for two touchdowns. Savarius Evans had a rushing score and recovered a fumble.

“We’re young,” Decatur Heritage coach Nikita Stover said. “We play a bunch of eighth, ninth and 10th graders and they play both ways and they’re showing each week in practice how much better they want to get, how hungry they are to do it and it showed tonight.”

Cam DeJesus had a rushing score for Carbon Hill (0-1). Walker Kimbrell three for a touchdown pass to Cole Brooks. Devon Daniel ran for a 2-point conversion.

Solley credited Stover and the rest of the coaching staff for their game preparation.

“(They emphasized putting in time in) the weight room,” Solley said. “Being in shape. Being disciplined. Reading our keys. Working hard. Putting others before ourselves.”

Decatur Heritage will open Region 7 play at Valley Head on Friday. Carbon Hill (0-1) will host non-region opponent Winston County.
