Constables holding benefit rodeo

The Walker County Constables Association will hold a rodeo this weekend to benefit several area charities.

It is the second year in a row a Southeastern Professional Rodeo Association (SPRA) event has been held in Jasper as a fundraiser for the constables. The rodeo will be Friday, Aug. 5 and Saturday, Aug. 6. Gates will open at 5 p.m. with the event to begin at 7. Admission is $10 for ages 6-12 and $15 for adults. Children 5 and under will be admitted free.

Larry Odom, the president of the WCCA, said the association was planning an even bigger rodeo this year. With that, he expects a larger crowd.

“We have had over 58,000 shares on Facebook with 15,000 people marking that they are going,” he said. “We’ve also sold a lot more raffle tickets this time. We hope we raise more money so we can help more people.”

Funds from the rodeo last year were used to help residents from Shadescrest Nursing Home by providing them with gifts and other items for Christmas. Donations ere also given to the Christmas Shoe Fund and the Walker County Department of Human Resources Christmas Fund.

Odom said the plan this year is to give to charities as well as starting scholarship programs for Walker County residents.

On both nights there will be an event for children where a ribbon will be put on the tail of a calf and children, for $1, can chase the calf and win a cash prize for grabbing the ribbon.

Odom said they would have an event on Saturday where ladies 18 and over can attempt to get the ribbon from a calf with the winner getting a piece of jewelry from Young’s Jewelers.

Competitors in the rodeo will be from across the Southeast.
