CORDOVA – Oakman sophomore running back Tyler Thomas broke tackles and made big plays on his way to 120 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Wildcats to a 20-9 win on the road Thursday night over rival Cordova.
The Blue Devils came out in a wishbone offense, making several big plays in the first half, leading them to a 9-6 lead. Cordova put up 177 total yards in the first half, compared to 136 yards for Oakman.
After halftime, the game was dominated by Oakman. The Wildcats’ defense held Cordova to only 38 yards in the second half, while Oakman totaled 178 yards in the second half and had a huge advantage in time of possession.
Thomas scored on a 30-yard run in the second quarter to give Oakman the lead. The Wildcats then went on a 16-play, 75-yard drive that started late in the third quarter and ended with 2:15 left in the game when quarterback Caden Aaron scored on a 1-yard run. Aaron finished the game 10-of-18 for 127 yards and the rushing score. Aaron’s favorite targets were Bridger Uptain who caught six passes for 59 yards and Luke Martin who hauled in two catches for 45 yards.
“I don’t really know what to say — what a night,” Oakman coach Ryan Hall said. “It was a huge crowd and a very physical game. I’m proud of our players and coaches. They do so much right. For them to be rewarded is such a blessing. To God be the glory.”
Oakman improves to 1-1 yards n the season. They will travel to Midfield to open region play next week.
Cordova drops to 0-2. The Blue Devils will open region play hosting Haleyville next Friday.
