Oakman outmatched by Fayette County

FAYETTE – In a battle of undefeated Class 3A Region 5 teams, the experience of Fayette County High School proved to be too much for the youthful Wildcats.

“We made too many mistakes to beat a team of Fayette’s caliber,” Oakman Coach Ryan Hall.

After forcing Oakman to a 3 and out on the opening drive, Fayette bullied their way 80 yards on six plays into the endzone.  After the successful two-point conversion, the Tigers led 8-0 with 7:36 remaining in the first quarter.

A few drives later, Oakman scored on a Rick Johnson 2-yard run after charging 45 yards on eleven plays. Brady Jones’ extra point attempt was good, bringing the score to 8-7 with 6:49 remaining in the 1st half. However, Fayette answered immediately with a drive of their own, bringing the score to 15-7 with a score of their own.

The Tigers began the second half the same way as the first half. After a fair catch on the opening kickoff, Fayette went 66 yards to pay dirt for their third rushing touchdown of the night.

The Wildcats came back swinging when Trace Cagle hit RIck Johnson with a 46-yard pass. Unfortunately, before Johnson could cross the goalline, he was stripped and the ball went rolling out of the end zone for a Tiger touchback. Despite the adversity, The Wildcats were able to force a three and out.

Oakman went 61 yards on twelve plays to the Fayette 2-yard line before a false start penalty set them back to the 7-yard line. The Cats could not convert, turning the ball over on downs.

“We competed our tails off and kept ourselves in the game,” Hall said. “We can live with the physical mistakes, we will continue to work to get them corrected, but we are excited about how hard we played and we kept fighting through the mistakes.”

Oakman falls to 3-4 (3-1) on the season but are tied for second in their region. The Wildcats get a much-needed bye week before a brutal stretch of Gordo, Winfield, and Meek, who are a combined 17-2 on the season.

Standout players of the game:

OHS

Logan Tarvin – 12 Tackles

Peyton Mclemore –  5 tackles & 1 sack.

Trace Cagle –  10 Tackles, 1 sack, and 121 yards combined rushing/passing
