Letters from the Community: A salute to Gabby’s

For more that 50 years, Gabby’s Restaurant served customers in Jasper and the surrounding area. Its family atmosphere appealed to the locals and the food appealed to everyone who ate there.

Now the second owner, Ms. Linda, has earned a well-deserved rest and decided to begin this year with her retirement. Ms. Linda has owned Gabby’s for 31 years and kept the name and the wonderful food after she bought it from the original owners. Linda was actually one of the waitresses that worked there when the original owners decided to leave. She bought it and kept the place right own going.

This amazing place is a generational eatery. One patron said, “I have been coming here since my father would bring me here before going hunting at 5am. I have brought my kids and now my grandkids here to have breakfast at least once a month. That’s all my grand-daughter will ask for when spending the night.”

Another patron said, “Their chicken dressing is a food group unto itself.”

So many people have fantastic family memories surrounding eating at Gabby’s. It is definitely an end of an era with the closing of the beloved restaurant.

However, there will be a new establishment opening in the place of Gabby’s. The new owner spoke to me today when I went as usual to get breakfast and saw the remodeling going on. She said that she bought the place and will be opening “Tony’s”. It will be opening on January 10th

Here is my salute the Gabby’s and Ms Linda’s much deserved retirement and my hello to the new Tony’s when it opens. You can count me to be there the day they open back up.

David Hood, Jasper
