Parrish students learn Black History

Parrish Elementary/Middle School on Tuesday held a Black History Month presentation.

Students at the school created posters and had a living wax museum of famous African Americans. Members of the community also came to the event to speak to students. Those guests were Jerry Callahan,, La’Tisha Oliver, Shirley Mitchell, Queen Tarvin, Ann Wells, Autryenell Barnes, Cedrick Ramsey and Jarius Williams. All the guests had ties to Parrish, and they spoke to students of the importance of education and encouraged them to help create a positive future in Parrish.

James Phillips is a proud native of the Walker County community of Empire. He currently lives in Jasper with Andrea, his wife of 23 years, and his five children, Stone, Breeze, Daisy, Joy, and Zuzu. Phillips has won nearly 200 awards over his 26-year career in media. He has also been a statewide and regional speaker on the social media/digital media within the newspaper industry. Phillips hobbies include spending time with his family and owning Jasper-based New Era Wrestling.
