Cordova, Carbon Hill, SCS fall in Week 3

CORDOVA — In the Class 4A, Region 5 opener for both teams, Haleyville picked up a 36-21 win over Cordova. 

Haleyville (2-1, 1-1) capitalized on a Cordova fumble, scooping and scoring for a touchdown less than a minute into the game. A 2-point conversation gave the Lions an early 8-0 lead. 

The Blue Devils (0-3, 0-1) bounced back early in the second quarter when freshman quarterback Lincoln Smothers hit Kaden Williams on a scoring strike to cut the lead to 8-7 with 11:52 left in the second quarter. Cordova took its first and only lead of the night, 14-8, at the 5:15 mark of the second quarter on a Mason Bates touchdown run. 

Haleyville scored two touchdowns in the final two minutes of the half to take a 22-14 lead at halftime. 

The Lions increased their lead to 36-14 before Smothers connected with Williams again for a touchdown midway through the fourth quarter to cut the final deficit to 36-21. 

Smothers was 11-of-21 for 223 yards with two touchdowns and an interception, while also rushing for 25 yards. Mason Bates carried the ball 14 times for 90 yards and a touchdown. David Odom ran for 55 yards on 21 Carrie’s. Williams had six catches for 135 yards and two scores.

Winston County 62, Carbon Hill 28

DOUBLE SPRINGS — Winston County rolled up more than 650 yards of total offense Friday night in a 62-28 win over Carbon Hill. 

Winston County (2-1) led 7-0 at the end of the first quarter and increased its lead to 33-0 at halftime. The Yellow Jackets led 49-12 after three quarters, before finishing up with the 62-28 victory. 

Winston County quarterback Landon Kelley finished with six total touchdowns, throwing for 258 yards and three touchdowns, while also running for 103 yards and three scores. gaining 103 yards on the ground. Running back Rakim Moore scored three different ways (rushing, receiving and passing), finishing with 389 total yards. Eli Moore caught five passes for 188 yards and three touchdowns. 

For Carbon Hill, Walker Kimbrell had 186 passing yards with three touchdowns and ran for 52 yards and a score. Cole Brooks had four catches for 86 yards and two touchdowns. Jacob Walker led the Bulldogs on the ground with four carries for 78 yards and had a catch for a touchdown.

Carbon Hill (0-2) will open Class 3A, Region 5 play next week at Fayette County. 

No. 3 Pickens County 56, Sumiton Christian 0

REFORM — Class 1A’s No. 3-ranked team, Pickens County picked up a dominating 56-0 win Friday night over Sumiton Christian. The Tornadoes led the Eagles 34-0 after one quarter, 48-0 at the half and 56-0 after three quarters. Neither team scored in the fourth. 

Sumiton Christian (0-2, 0-2) will host No.4-ranked Lynn (1-1) in another region game this week.
