BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (Community Journal) – Central Alabama will stay locked into a warm, dry pattern through the end of the week, with little relief in sight for worsening drought conditions.
High pressure is firmly in control, keeping skies mostly sunny and rainfall chances near zero. Afternoon highs Thursday will range from the upper 70s along the Georgia border to the mid-80s across much of the region. Tuscaloosa could top out near 88 degrees. Winds will be breezy during the day, with gusts up to 20 mph before calming tonight.
Overnight lows will fall into the mid-50s north of Birmingham and hover near 60 degrees farther south. Friday brings more of the same – dry conditions, highs in the low to mid-80s, and cool morning starts in the 50s.
A potential change arrives late this weekend. A developing coastal low near the Gulf could lift northward, bringing at least a small chance of scattered showers to southern Alabama Sunday into early next week. The track of this system remains uncertain, and forecasters caution that most of Central Alabama will likely remain dry.
Despite the slight rain chances, the bigger story continues to be drought. The National Weather Service says moderate to severe drought conditions are already widespread, and without significant rainfall, expansion is expected in the weeks ahead.
