Parrish approves paving project at special called meeting

PARRISH – The Parrish Town Council held a special called meeting on Tuesday to approve a paving project.

Council members approved a contract with Central Alabama Asphalt & Construction to pace the bottom half of Engle Street in front of Parrish Elementary/Middle School. The cost for the paving will be $49,075. State bidding law says a municipality can fund a project like this without bidding it out as long as it is less than $50,000.

“The street is most likely our most used street in the town limits excluding the state and county roads. We have had to make band aid repairs in the last few years and we saw the opportunity to solidify the road for the coming years,” Mayor Bubba Cagle said. “PEMS is our most important asset in the Town of Parrish. We want to make it as safe and durable as possible for our children, parents, bus drivers, faculty and staff. We are thankful for Commissioner Jim Borden, Chairman Steve Miller and all of the Walker County Commissioners for the Main Drive paving project. Main Drive is our main access road to PEMS. Words cannot express the impact the project will have on our town, getting Main Drive paved after 30 plus years.”

Cagle said the town wants to continue the momentum from the county’s main street project and its current Community Development Block Grant that is under construction on Edison-Atkins Street, Shady Grove Road and a small portion of New Baltimore Road.

The town also has two small road drainage projects starting next week on Stanfield Road and Taylor Street. Cagle said he hopes to have Engle Street completed by the end of February.

Cagle said the special meeting was called Tuesday to get the project moving since the construction company is already in town working on the CDBG project.

“We knew we must move fast if we wanted get the work done quickly before they move their equipment elsewhere,” Cagle said.
