Parrish votes to drop speed limit on section of Highway 269

By James Phillips, The Community Journal

The speed limit on Highway 269 will soon drop through the Town of Parrish.

Members of the Parrish Town Council have voted to lower the speed limit from 55 miles per hour to 50 mph on the highway from the 32.270-mile post north to the 35,270-mile post, near the Parrish Post Office.

“We have had several traffic accidents and traffic fatalities the past few years,” Parrish Police Chief Danny Woodard said on Wednesday. “Speed has been a factor in some of the accidents.”

Parrish officials had hoped to drop the speed limit along that stretch of highway to as low as 35 mph, but the state would not approve that request.

Woodard said the state has approved the 50 mph speed limit, but there is not currently a timetable for when the change will officially take place.

In other action from the meeting, the council:

• Approved Mayor Bubba Cagle as a voting representative at an upcoming Alabama League of Municipalities meeting.

• Voted to allow a town accountant, Steve Ballard, to have online login access to the town’s Truist bank account.

• Approved Cagle to purchase a Massey Ferguson tractor from Coblenz Equipment and Parts in Montgomery on a state bid not to exceed $60,000. Council members also gave Cagle approval to lease a tractor attachment arm and mower from Coblenz for no more than $40,000.

• Declared April as Fair Housing Month, marking the 55th anniversary of the U.S. Fair Housing Act.
