Cordova PD receives grant for equipment

By James Phillips, The Community Journal

CORDOVA – Police Chief Krimson Culverson announced during a Cordova City Council meeting last week the department has received a grant to purchase additional tools, equipment and technology for the Cordova Police Department.

Gov. Kay Ivey awarded the grants as part of more than $750,000 to equip Alabama law enforcement from the U.S. Department of Justice. The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the awards.

“Law enforcement face dangers every day as they keep watch over our neighborhoods and communities,” Ivey said in a press release. “We must ensure they have the equipment they need to both effectively and safely perform their jobs.  These grant funds will be beneficial in that effort.”

The Cordova grant was $23,941, and Culverson said it was being used to purchase several different items, including new radar units, new vests, weighted traffic cones, taser guns, body cameras and drug testing equipment.

“These were all things our department needed, and the grant allowed us to do that without spending the city’s money,” Culverson said, adding that he applied for the grant himself.

Mayor Jeremy Pate thanked Culverson and the entire Cordova Police Department for their service to the city. He also remarked on Culverson applying for the grant.

“This is the first time he had applied for grant funding,” Pate said. “He actually applied for two different grants, and he got one and didn’t get one. I’d say that’s a good average. I’m proud of him for taking the initiative to go after grant funds.”
