DORA – The Dora City Council recently annexed a piece of property that will extend its city limits to Interstate 22.
The property, owned by Drummond Company, is the spot that will become Heritage Landing, a major commercial development just off the Dora exit of I-22.
Dora Mayor Randy Stephens said getting the city limits extended to the interstate has been a goal for more than a decade.
“This has been our goal since before I-22 was even completed, Stephens said. “This annexation will be a major thing for our city. I told our council that we might not see the full results of this in our lifetime, but the benefits could positively change our city for a long, long time.”
The city also passed an economic incentives package concerning the project at the May 11 meeting.
Heritage Landing is a 69-acre development with approximately 42 acres planned for construction and the remaining land to be used for roads. Stephens said the plan told to him was there would be 12 spots for businesses.
“It’s going to take time. It’s a large development,” he said. “Drummond Company has already done a lot of work out there, but there is much more to be done, by us and them.”
Stephens said the city’s work as a part of the agreement will include getting lighting at the interstate exit, building water towers in the area and extending sewer to the location.
Stephens added that anyone owning property adjacent to the Drummond property or the 11-acre “L-shaped” piece of property owned by Northport-based Alawest-AL, LLC that was annexed in March can now be annexed into the city.
“We want anyone who wants to be in our city to have that opportunity,” he said. “These annexations open the door for many people, especially in the Yerkwood community, to be annexed into Dora.”
