WCSO attempting to identify human jaw bone found in Curry

The Walker County Sheriff’s Office is asking the public’s help in identifying human remains found in the Curry area earlier this year.

A resident on Tower Loop in the Curry called the Sheriff’s Office on April 16 to report a human bone found in their yard.

Deputies responded to collect the bone. Two small searches were performed on separate days with no additional bones found.

A larger search was conducted on April 21 with the assistance of extra personnel, and the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office K9 Unit. No additional remains were found.

A second large search was conducted on April 28 with the assistance of extra personnel, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office K9 Unit and our Aviation Division. No other remains were found.

The jaw bone and lower teeth were sent to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences (DFS) for DNA analysis. DFS was only able to report that the remains belong to a male with no additional details.

The jaw bone and teeth have since been sent to the FBI Lab in Quantico, VA for additional testing to assist Investigators with the unidentified remains.

“Going back to the 1940’s (of reports and records) we are aware of 18 males reported missing in Walker County that have not been found or seen since reported missing,” Sheriff Nick Smith said.

That includes those reported to the Walker County Sheriff’s Office, Jasper Police Department, Sumiton Police Department, and Carbon Hill Police Department.

Several of the males reported missing have been ruled out by their dental profile.

“We are asking the families of missing loved ones (males) that have dental records to please contact us,” Smith said. “We know from examination that the teeth are in perfect condition and contain no fillings.”
