Witches Ride raises funds for local woman battling cancer

SUMITON — The inaugural Walker County Witches Ride took place in Sumiton on Saturday, Oct. 14, bringing together community members for a night of Halloween-themed fun while supporting a worthy cause. The event, organized by the WCWR Committee, aimed to raise funds for local needs while providing an entertaining experience for participants.

The highlight of the event was the whimsical bike parade, where participants dressed up in their favorite witches costumes and rode through the community on bikes, golf carts and even brooms. The parade created a festive atmosphere as witches of all ages pedaled their way through the streets, spreading Halloween cheer.

The WCWR Committee proudly announced Pippa Godfrey as the beneficiary of the inaugural event. Pippa, a long-time member of the community, has made significant contributions over the years. She founded “All God’s Children Learning Center” in 2000, providing a nurturing environment for working parents and their children. Pippa’s involvement with the Sumiton Church of God and her dedication to her son, Jackson, who tragically passed away in 2020, further exemplify her commitment to the community.

Unfortunately, Pippa was diagnosed with colon cancer in May 2023, which has prevented her from continuing her work. Recognizing her hardships, the community rallied together to support her in a special way, making her the deserving recipient of the funds raised during the Walker County Witches Ride.

The event proved to be a resounding success, generating a total of $14,000 through corporate sponsorships, donations, ticket sales, t-shirt sales and concessions. Thanks to the generosity of local businesses, discounted prices were secured for t-shirts, while various items such as inflatables were donated. After deducting approximately $2,000 in expenses, the net proceeds of $12,000 will go directly towards assisting Pippa with her medical care.

Pippa, who was unable to attend the event in person due to her ongoing treatment, was able to witness some of the festivities via FaceTime. The outpouring of love and support from the community uplifted her spirits, and she expressed her heartfelt appreciation for the overwhelming support she has received.

The WCWR Committee extended their gratitude to everyone who volunteered, attended, and contributed to the success of the event. They urged the community to continue lifting Pippa and her family in prayer as she continues her battle against cancer.

The Walker County Witches Ride not only brought joy and laughter to the community but also demonstrated the power of unity and compassion in supporting those in need. As the event concluded, the organizers and participants celebrated the success of the inaugural ride and looked forward to future editions of the Walker County Witches Ride, continuing the tradition of fun, community, and support for years to come. The next ride will be Tuesday, Oct. 31 in Jasper. That event will also benefit Godfrey. More details will be published in an upcoming story.
