The G. Mays and Sons building in downtown Jasper is expected to become an archive to be used by the Walker County Probate Judge’s Office.
Probate Judge A. Lee Tucker said on Friday the county closed on the purchase of the building on Thursday.
“We are excited about the possibilities this will offer,” Tucker said.
Being able to expand the office to the vacant building next door will allow for an archive for historical documents that date back to the late 1800s. It could also allow for extra judicial space.
“As we move documents, we will also have them digitized as another way to preserve them and allow easier access to the public.
Tucker said the building will need renovations, and the moving of the records will take a while. He said the next step would be to have the space looked at by an architect to come up with a plan for moving forward.
“This will take some time,” he said. “I expect it to take two years.”
Tucker said more information would be released once a full plan is made.
