Walker County Commission Chairman Steve Miller released his “Chairman’s Update” on Monday, highlighting projects and recent highlights from the commission.
One item of note in the chairman’s release on social media was the current state of the county’s financial reserve, noting that his objective as chairman has always been to manage the budget and “put the county in the best financial situation possible.”
“I am happy to say we have built up the county reserves to the point that if a major catastrophe occurred, we could operate for a quarter of the year,” Miller said.
He also made note that since his election in November 2020, over $9 million has been spent on roads across the county.
Ongoing projects for the County Commission include Brown’s Bridge, which is under construction, up to $500,000 in renovations at the Justice Center Annex 3, the Smith’s Chapel Bridge project and more.
County highlights, as noted by Miller, include:
- Five percent raise for county employees
- Purchased Alabama Power building for new justice center
- Purchase of G May & Son’s building for Probate Annex
- Acquired $500,000 grant for Coroner, which includes two vehicles, mobile morgue and morgue building
- Acquired $260,000 grant for courthouse doors and bathroom renovation
- New heating and air units for the Walker County Jail and new lighting package for the jail
- Increased security for courthouse and annexes
- Purchase of new trucks, equipment and roll-offs for solid waste
The Walker County Commission next meets on Monday, February 6 at 9:30 a.m.
