Demolition starts at Sherer Auditorium in Jasper

Demolition began on Tuesday at Sherer Auditorium as work is underway to renovate the building that will eventually serve as the City of Jasper’s new City Hall.

The city shared photos on social media on Tuesday of the beginning of the work. Mayor David O’Mary and the City Council were on hand with construction crews to mark the occasion.

Sherer Auditorium will undergo an extensive $6.9 million renovation as part of the mayor’s Four-Point Investment Plan, which said the plan is to develop administrative offices in the historic building and could also possibly see the city using basement space for rental and other opportunities.

The building, not currently used in any public capacity, was built in 1938 by the Works Progress Administration.

“Sherer Auditorium is an integral part of the rich history of Jasper,” District 4 councilwoman said on jaspercity.com last year. “For generations, the building has been a part of the shared memories of our community. I am excited about the possibilities of breathing new life into this historical structure by creating a municipal facility that is accessible to all and available to current and future citizens!”

At the December 20 council meeting, the city awarded the big for the renovation to Coston Construction.
