CARBON HILL — Crews have been working in Carbon Hill this week to destroy beaver dams that have caused major flood issues in the city.
“Several hundred acres was a swamp after beavers created a network of dams on the south side of town,” Mayor David Phillips told The Community Journal on Thursday. “City officials decided to address the problem and rented an excavator to tear out dams.”
Phillips said plans are in place to create better access to flooded areas to maintain the beaver population and keep canals free flowing.
“While workers cleared the dams, local trappers have been steady at work ridding of the beavers as best they can,” Phillips added.
Flooding was affecting several businesses and homes. It was also deteriorating the city’s drainage system.
Carbon Hill Street Department Supervisor Scott Jenkins has served as coordinator of the project.
“He has overseen all efforts and has far exceeded expectations of what we thought the outcome would be,” Phillips said.
