Qualifying ends for 2024 election

Qualifying for local candidates ended Friday with one longtime politician throwing his name into the ring for the Walker County Commission Chairman position.

Former state senator and agricultural commissioner Charles Bishop qualified Friday afternoon.

“I’ve dedicated my life to serving Walker County and making it a better place,” Bishop told The Community Journal. “I do not think the current chairman is leading our county in a positive direction, and that’s one of the reasons I decided to run for chairman.”

Bishop, who will turn 86 next week, said he wants to improve county government to have it in a place where a “younger generation will have an easier job taking over in the future.”

“I want one term to improve our county,” he said. “I want to get everyone on the same page, and I think that will get it ready for younger people to lead. I have the experience to be able do that.”
